Hand-Painted Stocking Holders

This year when I got out my Christmas decorations I was so sad to discover that my stocking holders would not sit on this mantle.  This was because of the shape of the mantle and, unfortunately, the holders are ceramic and I didn't want to take the chance of them falling and breaking into a million pieces!

I set out to find some new ones that would sit on my mantle and/or not be breakable!  This was no easy task!  And, they are so expensive these days!  I am not one to spend money on seasonal items anyway just to pack them up and leave them in storage for 11 months out of the year.  So, after weeks of agonizing over this (I'm not sure why!  I could have easily just put a thumbtack in the mantle for each stocking and been done with it! lol)  I decided to figure out a way to make some.

I found these cute, square picture frames at Wal-Mart for only .97 each!  I actually had not intended to make stocking holders out of them, but just to paint them and put pictures of my kids in them and hang the stockings (with a thumbtack! ugh!!) under them.  Then, I sat down to paint them and a light bulb went off in my head!  Somehow, I could turn these into my stocking holders!  So, I decided to attach a clothespin to the bottom to hold the stocking and voila!  My stocking holder was born.  I think they turned out really cute and now that they are painted Christmas colors, I think I'm going to go back and get six more frames to paint for the other 11 months of the year!

Here are my quick and easy directions:

1.  Use sandpaper to smooth the rough edges around the frame.
2.  Hot glue a clothespin to the bottom of the frame with the clip side facing to the left.
3.  Paint with any acrylic paints you like.  You will need at least 2 coats.  Use a paint pen to write names.
4.  Hot glue the peg into the hole on the back of the frame to keep it sturdy.
5.  Add a picture and ENJOY!

Please share with us any great handmade stocking holders that you have made!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
